Aerith Gainsborough - Final Fantasy VII
Long before I even knew what cosplay was, I loved Aerith and wanted to dress up as her! However once I got into cosplay I realised that lots of people do Aerith, and not often to a good standard, so I decided to wait until I felt ready to do my favourite character justice.
Eventually, in late 2009 I was looking at a pile of gorgeous pink silk I had from pipe dreams of another costume that I didn’t go through with… and realised I could probably realise my dream!
My favourite part of this costume was the Fairy Tale staff, which I made completely by myself! I used this as a reference - it was my first big prop and I was reeeaally happy with it! Unfortunatley it got broken about a month after the convention, but I’d love to remake this costume one day so I don’t mind making another! :D
It’s also the first time I did any major styling to a wig. I bought a brown double ponytails wig and cut one up for extensions to make the curls at the front. I’d recently seen a tutorial on how to do Medusa from Soul Eater’s hair twist, and realised it was perfect for Aerith’s twisted ponytail too. If I ever do remake it, I’d like to have a bit more volume next time!
I learnt a lot while making this costume, and it was so much fun finally portraying my favourite character from my favourite game! I’d love to get an FF7 group together some day and do it all over again! I’ll be even better next time!
